SCOTUS ruling on Obamacare gives credit to a badly-written bill

Commenting on the Supreme Court's decision to uphold Affordable Care Act subsidies:

"Today’s decision from the Supreme Court has given credit to a badly-written bill that intentionally avoided re-drafting and compromise.

"The Affordable Care Act originally came to the floor when the Democrats had a supermajority in Congress and there was no chance of a filibuster. Once that supermajority was threatened, President Obama worked with House and Senate leaders to prematurely pass the bill in order to avoid re-drafting with input from Republicans.

"The result was a badly-worded law that no one had read, easily subject to error.

"The United States is in desperate need of healthcare reform, but the changes delivered by the ACA have manifested in higher non-group premium costs in 45 states, the inability to keep one’s doctor, and further financial burdens placed on the poorest and sickest patients. All the while, millions of Americans remain uninsured, with poor access to quality healthcare.

"The passage of the Affordable Care Act valued politicking over legality and policy-making. The Supreme Court has ruled that the bill holds up to scrutiny, but Americans experiencing the consequences of its mistakes know better."
